Legal Dimensions

STAA (Surface Transportation Assistance Act) (KRS 189.222)

 - Legal overall length allows a 53 FT trailer (with any size tractor), on Interstates and Designated Highways.
 - Legal overall length for Straight Trucks 45 FT
 - Legal Width is 8 feet 6 inches.
 - Legal Height is 13 feet 6 inches on all highways​.
 - Legal gross Weight for 5 or more axles is up to 80,000 lbs.​

Non-STAA (KRS 189.221)

 - Legal overall length for truck and trailer is 65 FT.
 - Legal overall length for Straight Trucks is 26-1/2 FT.
 - Legal Width 8 FT.

Travel Restrictions
Our Overweight / Over-Dimensional Restriction list is updated regularly.  - Holiday Traffic
​There is no longer a "Holiday" travel restriction in Kentucky unless it is a Super​load or a House move.​

 - Hours of Travel
There is no Night time travel restriction in Kentucky. Manufactured homes are excluded from this policy, and are limited to daylight hours only.​

 - County Restrictions
Continuous travel (24-7) is permitted except the following:
​​No Overweight / Over-Dimensional loads will be permitted to travel in Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Fayette, or Jefferson County on Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00am - 9:00am or 4:00pm - 6:00pm

 - Manufactured homes
Manufactured homes may not travel at any time on Sunday and are restricted to travel Monday through Saturday, daylight hours only.​

 Note: An Overweight or Over-Dimensional load originating in Fayette County shall be exempt from rush hour traffic restrictions on Interstate 64 and Interstate 75 in Fayette County and on connecting routes to both interstates up to a distance of three (3) miles from the interstates.

Operating Time
Permitted loads may travel twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week except from 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the following counties:  Jefferson County, Boone County, Kenton County, Campbell County and Fayette County.  The bridge at Owensboro is also restricted from the above travel times.
Weekend Travel
Permitted loads are allowed travel on the weekends. Travel is restricted on weekend for Super-loads.
Divisible Loads
Permitted loads must be broken down to the lowest possible dimensions.
Blades, buckets, etc. that are over 14' wide must be removed, but can be hauled on the same trailer as the main unit.
Restricted Travel
Travel is limited to 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the following counties:  Jefferson County, Boone County, Campbell County, Fayette County, Kenton County and the 431 Bridge at Owensboro between KY and IN.  Vehicles not delivering into Cincinnati area must use I-275 to enter Ohio.
Holiday Restrictions
Kentucky no longer has a Holiday restriction unless it is a Super-load or a house move.
Spring Weight Restrictions
There are no Seasonal Weight Restrictions for the state of Kentucky.
Superload Requirements
Loads or vehicles that are 125' long, 16' wide, 15'6ö high, and 250,000 lbs. or more are considered Super-loads.  Super-load applications require drawings including axle spacing, and axle weights as well as a Route Survey.  Applications for Super-load shipments should be allowed between ten (10) and twelve (12) business days for processing, and approval.
Depending on Routes, all loads weighing over 200,000 lbs. and up will be considered for a bridge analysis, loaded or empty.  All trailers with trunion axles will automatically be submitted for bridge analysis.
