Oversize load permits in Pennsylvania
PTC Announces Additional Changes to Over-Dimensional (Class 9) Permit Requirements

On February 2, 2015, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), in coordination with PennDOT and the FHWA, changed its permit requirements for Over-Dimensional (Class 9) vehicles. Customers operating any vehicle and load that has a maximum gross vehicle weight of more than 100,000 pounds must obtain an Over-Dimensional (Class 9) permit before entering the PA Turnpike.

Pursuant to federal law, beginning on June 30, 2015, the PTC will only issue Over-Dimensional (Class 9) permits for nondivisible vehicles and loads with a maximum gross vehicle weight of more than 100,000 pounds. Accordingly, customers are advised that a vehicle and load that weighs in excess of 100,000 pounds, and which does not meet the federal definition of nondivisible, cannot legally enter the PA Turnpike.

Truck Dispatch Services is a professional dispatching company for owner operators and truck drivers.

Definition of Nondivisible Load or Vehicle

(1) Any load or vehicle exceeding applicable length or weight limits which, if separated into smaller loads or vehicles, would:
(i) Compromise the intended use of the vehicle, i.e., make it unable to perform the function for which it was intended;
(ii) Destroy the value of the load or vehicle, i.e., make it unusable for its intended purpose; or
(iii) Require more than 8 workhours to dismantle using appropriate equipment. The applicant for a nondivisible load permit has the burden of proof as to the number of workhours required to dismantle the load.
The PTC will not require customers to obtain an Over-Dimensional (Class 9) permit for a vehicle and load that does not have a maximum gross vehicle weight of more than 100,000 pounds, provided the vehicle and load meets the PTC's regulations regarding height, width, length, and axle weight.
